NEWS *PLUS* PHOTOS: HEALTH, CAPTAIN AHAB, FAG BASHERS, BAD LATINO & YABLOKI ROCK IL CORRAL!!!

First of all, a huge HUGE thank you to all the musicians and music fans and friends who packed Il Corral this past Monday night. I am sincerely grateful for your support :) It’s becoming a weekly ritual… like something out of a Jodorowsky movie. I love it!

Things to report:

-The Sean Carnage Monday night motto is: the show ALWAYS goes on. I have hosted Monday nights at different venues. I’m selective about who I collaborate with, and I don’t feel I’ve made any mistakes in that department. Jim at the Smell, Turtle and Tumble at Zamakibo, Bob, Christie, Stane… they’re all really nice and super into it. I *choose* to be at Il Corral because I like the energy and the people. It suits me.

-Il Corral is forever. Recognizing all the hard work EVERYONE has put into the space, Cory, Stane, Burgess, Christie and I had a great meeting Tuesday night. We will be carrying on and moving forward.

-All Il Corral shows will split the $5 entry this way: 40% to performers, 40% to venue, 20% for promoter (that last percentage is split 50/50 with sound bro for Mondays). I’ve used that formula for my Monday nights at Il Corral and Zamakibo, and at Speak In Tongues in Cleveland. It works.

-We’re buying a new PA. If you can lend a power amp or speakers, it would be appreciated, especially for this week. We have a basic vocal PA.

-The PA fund is at $698 and climbing. To everyone who has made paypal donations: we got your money and it’s in the fund. You rock.

Thoughts from this past Monday night:

It is two days later and I am STILL humming Captain Ahab songs.

I couldn’t photograph Ahab Jim because he was in the middle of so many dancers!

Health played some new material… One song sounded like thrash and made everyone go crazy. It was really gratifying to see so many people rocking to this amazing band.

Fag Bashers… They’re two bros cutting loose tossing some kegs, having a great time. If you missed them, you are most likely a total wuss. If you enjoyed them, guess what? You’re a wuss, too.

Bad Latino and Yabloki jammed… they sounded great! Bob and Kyle were a sick, jazzy nightmare. Yabloki had a riveting singer and danceable tunes. Veddy veddy nice.

DJ Margot played records and everyone did a little polka.

NEW! UPCOMING SHOW: ST. VALENTINE’S GAY—A NIGHT OF CUTTING-EDGE MUSIC, DJs… & VEGAN MASTER CHEF/QUEER ICON JOSHUA PLOEG!!!

totallygay.JPG
LOS ANGELES: Sean Carnage and Totally Mag! Magazine are proud to announce “St. Valentine’s Gay: A Night of Radical Music, Food & Fun for Queers,” on Monday, February 12th at Il Corral, East Hollywood’s premiere underground music and art performance space.

The event features performances from young, cutting-edge performers that will appeal to music fans both queer and straight: post-post-punk rockers Robin Williams On Fire (from Oakland), the singing and dancing multi-media star Macka, all-girl hard-rockers The Pristines and surrealistic crooner Alexis Gideon, who will also emcee. Superstar L.A.band Mika Miko’s Kate Hall is also slated to perform with guitarist Elijah Forrest.

DJs include Il Corral’s DJ Z Kyle and Margot Totally Mag!, co-host of the event and publisher of Totally Mag! celebrity zine.

As an added bonus, vegan master chef and Outpunk Records pioneer Joshua Ploeg (formerly of the radical queer punk band Behead The Prophet) will be creating original, all-vegetable sweets and savories to celebrate St. Valentine’s!

Come solo or bring a date to Il Corral, 662 N. Heliotrope Drive, Los Angeles (http://www.ilcorral.net). The event begins at 9:30pm. All-ages admission is $5. For more show info check http://www.seancarnage.com

“St. Valentine’s Gay is a celebration of queer youth and talent that builds on the success Margot Totally Mag! and I have had with our two previous Totally Gay! Nights at Il Corral,” says regular Il Corral Monday Night concert curator Sean Carnage.

“I’ve been hosting cutting-edge performers—the cream-of-the-crop from L.A. and across the nation—for nearly a year and I believe that this is our strongest line-up yet,” Carnage remarks. “If you are interested in underground music and expression—and if the straight AND queer mainstream burns you up—you owe it to yourself to check out this convergence of mayhem, music… and excellent food!”

Il Corral’s ascension to the apex of L.A.’s underground art and music scene was confirmed by the success of the venue’s Turn The Screws Festival of Love & Noise, which drew sell-out crowds in December 2006.

In addition, Sean Carnage’s documentary of the scene that has sprung up around Il Corral, 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES!, is now in wide release on DVD and has been racking up accolades from fans and publications. The L.A. Times who’s Chief Pop Critic Ann Powers selected 40 BANDS! as the #1 Pop Music DVD of 2006 in the Holiday Gift Guide, a big coup for music makers and young queers in Southern California.

“Totally Mag! (http://www.totallymag.tk) is a hilariously subversive celebrity magazine, so expect lots of wild pranks and surprises,” Carnage notes. “Margot and her crew will be documenting the evening for an upcoming issue of the magazine, so don’t miss out—if you’re punk and queer, this is your invitation to come join the fun!”

NEW! UPCOMING SHOW: IL CORRAL CELEBRATES IT’S SECOND BIRTHDAY WITH AN HISTORIC CONCERT & ALL-NIGHT DANCE PARTY!!

anavan_at_fall_tributejpg.jpg
LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles’ youth-oriented art & music community hub, Il Corral in East Hollywood, announces a celebration of the venue’s 2nd birthday on Saturday, January 27th at 7:30pm. The event boasts a bill of new, cutting-edge SoCal music and an all-night dance party scheduled to end at 11am on Sunday.

The birthday party starts with a reception at 7:30pm, followed by screening of 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES!, the critically-acclaimed new documentary film about Il Corral and the talented new performers who appear there each week (http://www.40band80minutes.com).

At 9:30pm sharp, a concert showcase of L.A.’s best underground bands explodes with performances from noise/jazz/hip-hop superstar Bizzart (http://www.myspace.com/bizzart), Crooked Cowboy (the country-music loving alter-ego of synth freaks Totally Radd! http://www.myspace.com/totallyradd), Il Corral founder and extreme noise artist Bob Bellerue (http://www.halfnormal.com/), and L.A.’s most-sophisticatedly raw dance-noise ensemble, Anavan (http://anavan.com/).

Music between sets is provided by DJ Jonathan from L.A. underground icons Captain Ahab (http://www.myspace.com/captainahab), and DJ BJ aka Manny from breakout Portland stars Atole (http://www.myspace.com/atole).

“I’m passionate about dance music, beats that haven’t been heard before,” says DJ BJ, also an artist and queer activist who is making the trip to L.A. from Portland to support a venue that has attracted a fan base up and down the West Coast.

“I will be dancing the whole time—I’ll do dance moves with changes in the beat,” DJ BJ reports. “99% of DJs suck. DJ BJ swallows!””

Finally, after midnight, the party transforms into an all-night dance party, Mindburger, presented by CalArts grad and DJ, Dog of Tears, and his wicked friends Konflux (Psytribe), Catalyx (Mindfull) and Belgian Goa Madness (Mindfull). Please come prepared for an intense trance-dance experience. The evening will begin with a mix of industrial and psychedelic beats before shifting to pure dark trance.

All-night admission for this one-time event is $10, and all proceeds go to Il Corral so that the space can finally own it’s own P.A. system.

“Il Corral’s ascension to the apex of L.A.’s underground art and music scene was confirmed by the success of the venue’s Turn The Screws Festival of Love & Noise, which drew sell-out crowds in December 2006,” says Sean Carnage, one of Il Corral’s regular promoters. “The space serves a core of over 500 experimenters and fans.

“I have curated a cutting-edge rock-and-electronic Monday night concert series at the venue for over eighteen months, and this is how our community thanks Il Corral,” explains Carnage. “This P.A. is absolutely crucial to keep our 2007 music and performance schedule on track.”

“If you are a music fan, you always know you will find the newest and best in ANY genre at the Corral,” Carnage says.

Come solo or bring a date to Il Corral, 662 N. Heliotrope Drive, Los Angeles (http://www.ilcorral.net). The event begins at 7:30pm. All-ages admission is $10. For more show info check http://www.seancarnage.com
