UPLAND RULES!!! HEALTH, ANAVAN, ABE VIGODA, WHITMAN, HALLOWEEN SWIM TEAM & MORE AT THE 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES! SILENCIO / INLAND EMPIRE PREMIERE!!!

148.jpg

It’s 10pm Saturday, and I am *barely* recovered from the incredible party on Friday night. The 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES! screening in Upland was SO much fun, holy shit, I can’t even begin to describe how great it was!!!

178.jpg
Over 25 people watched the screening and were very enthusiastic. It was amazing.

Then the bands played and another 80 people showed up—WOW!

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Old Baldy Brewery is one of the top venues for music in California. I really loved it there, and Lou and Shan and Juice from Silencio Recordings were the best hosts.

DJs Kyle, Jon San Nicolas, Celebrity Gossip, and Hate All were outstanding. THANKS EVERYBODY!!!

The crowd was OFF THE FUCKING HOOK thanks to the great music from Whitman, Anavan, Health, Abe Vigoda and Halloween Swim Team. They were the reason for the movie and the night and it was nice to see everyone back together in a new place, testifying to the awesomeness of the L.A. undergound music community!!!

There were new issues of TOTALLY! MAG, TOO!!!

So tonight, I wanna hang with my dude and recover some more. Unfirtunately that means missing a lot of great shows. Tell me how they turn out, won’t you?

Because come Monday—LOOK OUT!

It’s Anavan kicking off the first of 5 consecutive Mondays at Pehr Space!!!!!

This week’s guests: Health, A++, Foot Village, and your favorite KXLU DJs—Nick Pinto, McAllister, Paula Poundstone.

Don’t Miss it!

The show begins 9:30pm sharp / $5 / All-ages
Pehr Space, 325 Glendale Blvd. in Echo Park

See you there?

THIS FRIDAY’S 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES! I.E. PREMIERE & MONDAY’S ANAVAN SHOW NAMED TOP EVENTS OF THE WEEK!!!

The press has picked up on the historical and TOTAL ROCK GREATNESS of the 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES! Inland Empire premiere at the Old Baldy Brewery in Upland this Friday night.

The I.E. Weekly selected the event—which starts at 8pm and features Health, Anavan, Whitman, Abe Vigoda and a surprise “mystery” band from the movie (who have reunited specifically for this premiere!)—as the don’t-miss movie & music extravaganza of the week:

“March 6, 2006 was a pretty fascinating night at the Il Corral club in Hollywood. In the span of seven hours, 40 bands congregated to play two-minute sets apiece of noisy, arty, thrashy, jazzy, metal-y music—the ultimate in short-attention-span sonic theater, preserved forever on digital video, then spliced together into this documentary directed by the appropriately-named Sean Carnage. His film is a fascinating ogle from the first band, Captain Ahab, who blurt “This song’s called ‘Punch Yourself in the Crotch as Hard as You Can!’” From there, the ride never lets up—an acoustic folker strums and sings behind a panda bear mask. A raggedy girl warbles off-key into a mic as a beatbox blares behind her. A guy pounds a drum kit with one hand while playing and holding a trumpet in the other. Four dudes sit on the floor and intensely knock walnut shells (or something) around—a very poor man’s drum circle. Another guy just stands there a reads an L.A. Times while distortion effects zing around him. Then there’s the guy who makes a sandwich with his feet, and the kids in the crowd practically beat one another up over who gets to take a bite (yeah, that is pretty gross). Some of this stuff works tremendously—it’d be a pleasure to see one of the better bands such as Veer Right Young Pastor go the full 80 minutes. Other bands, though, are only interesting because of their name (Dog Shit Taco! Slutty Knuckles! Toxic Loincloth!). But there’s plenty to absorb in 40 Bands 80 Minutes! —so much that it’ll leave you wishing you could’ve been there a year ago. This, at least, is the next best thing.”

40 Bands 80 Minutes! screens at the Old Baldy Brewery, 271 N. Second Ave., Upland, (866) 377-6853; www.oldbaldybrewery.com. Fri., 8 p.m. $5.

PLUS: The L.A. Weekly selected the first installment of Anavan’s month-long stint programming Sean Carnage Mondays as a MUST-SEE concert! Woo-hoo!!

So c’mon and join in—you’re invited!

HERE’S A REVIEW OF 40 BANDS! THAT APPEARED IN THE MISSOULA INDEPENDENT A FEW WEEKS AGO:
40bandsmissoulareview.jpg

HERE’S A 40 BANDS! REVIEW FROM MEANSTREET MAGAZINE:

“In the loopy tradition of rock-cinema dada like Big T.N.T. Show and Urgh! A Music War comes this high-concept ear-shredding thrill ride. The titles tells the tale- 80 of the finest art-noise anarchs ever to drag amps get two mintues before director Sean Carnage’s camera to make their vicious stab at posterity. The bands careen a sloppy gamut between the sweet-boy pyrotechnics of Captain Ahab, Slutty Knuckles’ spazmo seizures and the orgiastic flailing of Dog Shit Taco, each offering hoarse testimony to the durability of the American underground. Highest recommendation.”

LADIES NIGHT PHOTOS!!!

1210.jpg
Ladies Night at Pehr Space was a huge success! All the music was amazing!!

We are really lucky to have so many cutting-edge female performers on our scene. I challenge anyone to pigeonhole the excellent, idiosyncratic music of VV Morgue, Premature Burial (Maria from Vaginals), Buko Panguerra, Regina Cherene, Foot Foot or Nora Keyes. These women transcend genre. They are making some of the best music in the WORLD right now, and we are lucky enough to be able to see them on a regular basis in Southern California.

Thank you to everyone who came out. Also, DJ McAllister and DJ Kyle deserve big props.

Pehr Space has been such an exellent home. Darren and Adam consistently go above and beyond the call to host our shows and make sure they go smoothly. Thanks!!!!

DON’T MISS THE PREMIERE OF 40 BANDS 80 MINUTES THIS *FRIDAY* IN THE I.E.

NEXT MONDAY BEGINS A MONTH-LONG SERIES OF ANAVAN-CURATED SEAN CARNAGE SHOWS, SO YOU DON’T WANNA MISS THAT EITHER!! (DETAILS FOR BOTH THE I.E. PREMIERE & THE ANAVAN EVENTS LISTED BELOW)
