EXCITING SHOW THIS MONDAY! PLUS UNBELIEVABLE NEW PICS: NASA SPACE UNIVERSE, BATTLEHOOCH, HEAVY FACE, KUATO, DREAMHOUSE, DESTROY TOKYO, BROTHER & SO MUCH MORE!!!

722.jpg
ROCK is alive in Los Angeles!!!!!!

I wanna say thank you to everyone who came to this past Monday’s show—we had an INCREDIBLE night of great new rock bands!!

Thanks especially to the bands and Kyle Mabson, who did his usual awesome job with the sound and DJing.

If you haven’t added Kuato, NASA Space Universe, Heavy Face, Dreamhouse, Brother, Destroy Tokyo and Battlehooch on Myspace DO IT NOW!!! Look them up, check out their music and dig them—all of them are the future… and they sound fucking flawless! I am really excited about this new musical era we are entering. These bands write awesome songs and go crazy onstage… Wild times!

Just a reminder: making noise outside of Pehrspace is going to mean the end of this wonderful venue. Screaming, cackling, loud talking, shouting, smashing or banging bottles and cans… PLEASE DON’T DO THIS. The venue is in a canyon and the sound amplifies as it travels up to our neighbors, who are hardworking blue-collar folks trying to get some rest. They love us, but don’t want to hear us. I don’t want to have a no ins-and-outs policy which is repugnant to me, so, please, keep it down when you are outside or going to your car. Don’t fuck this up!

The next two weeks are really exciting—one of my earliest L.A. friends, Mitchell Brown is curating. Mitch is “Professor Cantaloupe” on KXLU and is a gourmand of esoteric musics. These next two bills are perhaps our most diverse yet, and dancing is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. Don’t miss them!

THIS MONDAY’S SHOW IS GONNA ROCK!!! PLUS: AMAZING NEW PHOTOS!!!!

78.jpg

This past Monday, January 21st, was to be Brian Miller’s curated show but, unfortunately, a wave of illness, accidents (Blowupnihilist’s van rolled over and caused $6500 worth of damage) and crummy weather almost made the whole thing fall apart. Even my camera crapped out. Is it any wonder that psychologists call Jan. 21 is “the most depressing day of the year”?

But, hey, this was a Sean Carnage Monday, so with help from Brian and Jonathan from Captain Ahab, we picked ourselves out of the gutter and came up with one of our best concerts ever!

Eustachian and Surachai were incredible, dark black metal-meets-electronic brutality and instantly became my two new favorite performers! Dreamhouse was pure Jodorowsky “Panic Event” insanity—so great! Kyle Mabson even got into it, pushing John Thill repeatedly into the chaotic pit Dreamhouse instigated with their 100 foot blue tarp.

DJ the Flashbulb was superb, and I wish he would have stuck around longer. Cole (ex-Toxic Loincloth) was supposed to play as part of Animal Birth Control, but he took the stage solo, and it sounded/looked like his new project Human Hands. Whatever you want to call it, Cole was very spiritual and intensely singular after Dreamhouse’s mayhem—an awesome contrast.

Finally, Winners played their debut Pehr show and it was a fucking blast!! This is one of the best new L.A. groups around. They mixed beats, highly weird ‘n beautiful singing and even Nazi-esque dance routines and came up with pure gold, man. You gotta check out this band!

Mabson was clearly jazzed by all the craziness, and jammed tune after tune creating a huge end-of-the-night dance party—the biggest in recent memory. No one wanted to go home, and when we finally left it was very very late indeed.

This week’s Monday show is quite special. The theme is ROCK (my fave) and thinking about this incredible bill has been keeping me going for the past two months at least. NASA Space Universe is so so rad! The other bands are new, and they will blow your freaking mind! I am very proud of this show so I hope you can make it.

See you there?

THIS MONDAY: AMAZING NEW CUTTING-EDGE MUSIC & A SUPER SECRET GUEST, TOO!! PLUS: NEW PHOTOS!!!

511.jpg
Wow—this past Friday night totally rocked… with no “rock” music necessary! It was an outsider-acoustic music party and a TREMENDOUS success. We were up against some awesome shows at the Smell, Echo Curio, Tribal Cafe, etc. But despite the competition, a huge crowd showed up. And almost all were newbies. It’s great to see that nearly three years after I began hosting concerts, word about how fun and musically enthralling the shows are is still spreading!

Whitman deserves the credit for this one. He was back in L.A. for a few days on his big Western tour with Kelly from Splinter Cake. The bill was comprised of friends and compatriots of Whitman’s Folktale Records. Splintercake from Phoenix was an incredible surprise. Kelly’s songs and cheers were terrifically catchy and delivered in a strong, mellifluous vocal style. Very impressive!

Foot Ox and French Quarter were also phenomenal! Both spun plaintive, emotional tales of love gone wrong. The crowd was digging it, and so was I.

But the real stars were locals John Thill and Whitman. If you haven’t experienced the songs of John Thill… Damn! What are you waiting for!? The man writes some of the best tunes I’ve ever heard, and his unselfconscious performance style is gonna put a smile on the face of music fans who normally don’t love acoustic music. He’s among the most talented artists playing around these parts, so check out his stuff immediately and buy his CDs.

Whitman is perhaps less immediately accessible to the folk music dabbler—his haunting songs are like specters from another dimension. You have to be there to absorb their magic, but, dang, it is sooo worth it. Whitman’s a born showman and has a wonderful voice. He had an ingenious singing skull that accompanied him on several numbers, and even brought out stacks of old vinyl for the audience to smash during his last song. Cathartic, and just about perfect, I’d say… Whatta great night of new music!!!

Do NOT miss this coming Monday—DeathbombArc Records honcho Brian Miller curates.

There’s a reason Deathbomb has developed such an international reputation: Brian’s got his finger on the underground sound, circa NOW.

Also, on the bill is a SUPER-SECRET GUEST performer… I can’t say who he is, but he’s becoming well-known as one half of L.A.’s most written and talked about new music duos. He’s gotten tons of press with his band, and the hype is well-deserved. This Monday, he will be unveiling new guitar music that will stun you. In a year, when everyone is just getting turned on to it, you will be able to say “I heard it first!” And THAT’S WHAT MONDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT!!!

THIS MONDAY:
January 21st
Brian Miller curates!!!
Gabbertree …all star band with members of Captain Ahab and Foot Village
Winners …Monday Night mainstay Andrew’s DEVASTATING new band with Eva from Kevin Shields!
