CUTTING-EDGE SOLO & ACOUSTIC MUSIC THIS MONDAY! PLUS: NEW PHOTOS OF HEALTH, KYLE MABSON, EVERYBODY, OSCILLATOR, & RICK POTTS OF DINOSAURS WITH HORNS!!!

271.jpg
This past Monday was thoroughly—sensually—overwhelming. Musically, aesthetically and attendance-wise, the bands and performers blew the place out!!

Mitchell Brown was the guest Monday Night curator for the second week in a row, and his vision was undeniably potent. The bands he chose and the records he spun were the best of the best. Thanks, Mitch, you brought a lot of new music fans together in a way they have never come together before! This show had a particularly smart and energized audience.

Health was just incredible—can you believe that just two years ago they couldn’t hardly get a show here in L.A.? Now, thanks in large part to their huge cadre of Monday Night supporters, they are busting out all over the world. We won’t see them in SoCal for many months, but I for one will be following news of their tour online. The four-piece’s sublime fusion of hardcore noise, equally hardcore rock and trendy dance sounds and image are a great advertisement for the diversity and awesomeness of our lil’ scene.

Oscillator also blew the crowd away—but with with soaring, optically driven white noise and non-stop percussion. This band was really fucking good!!! Ben is in To Live and Shave in L.A. and Nick is in Crooked Cowboy, Rose for Bohdan and Anavan so this shouldn’t have been a surprise… but, again, WOW!!

Rick Potts of Dinosaurs with Horns created hypnotic, overlapping musical clouds of samples and noise as if he was deconstructing the show before it even happened! DJ Mahssa was superb. Her selections of slinky, vintage Middle Eastern funk were spot-on. And Everybody, delayed by several band members that were pressed into service backing a jazz vocalist at the Echo, ended up being the perfect closer. People didn’t stop dancing until nearly 3am when I finally said “Go home!” I’ve been exhausted all week, but this show was sooo worth it. Best show ever?

Last but definitely not least, our hero—Monday Night sound dude and my right-hand man with the shows—Kyle H. Mabson… Well, he hated how he sounded this night, but sometimes performers are not the best judges of their performances. I thought what Kyle did was amazing. And I don’t say that just because he’s my friend. I’m a grump sometimes so I’m not gonna butter him up if he sucked. On the contrary, I think that Kyle’s stew of old and new music, high and low culture, noise and visceral dance music, humor and grimly serious aural attack are at the pinnacle of something very special—something that really sets L.A. music circa 2008 apart from scenes in other parts of the world. And that something is FUN! Yep, it’s a crazy mixed up environment here in California—in the USA and in the the 21st Century in general—and Kyle’s got his finger on the pulse. We need music to be fun above all else. That’s what we’re all here for right!?

Don’t miss this week’s show, with plenty of solo and acoustic weirdness to mangle your brain…

See you there?

Kudos to everyone who performed this past week. Barry Conley’s “Out-of-Control-a-tron” performance—analog synthing taken past the limits—was enervating and spiritual… the perfect kick-off. Sonelle is Mitch Brown’s group, and they were rocking some dark dark Miles Davis “Agharta”-style vibrations that had everyone entranced. Scarnella was a duo of L.A. new music stalwarts Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline. Were they improvising throughout? Perhaps. But every wail, every swell of feedback, every single note was in the perfect place. The crowd erupted in enormous applause at the end. Foot Village put on perhaps their best-ever Pehr performance. The all-drum band has really refined their techniques. They are no longer ragged—they have honed their percussive power into a controlled deathwave. Death to half-assed music! The final performer, Jeff Boynton, is a solo circuit bender, and though the enormous crowd stuck around until the end (I am very proud that Monday Night crowds are so generous and loyal), I heard some skepticism that one man and his electronic toys could hold everyone’s attention after Foot Village’s ferocity. There was nothing to worry about—Jeff Boynton totally fucking ruled. This was an out-of-body experience for us all. The soundscapes Jeff created were utterly inspiring and enrapturing. Damn, I was really impressed. This guy knows his shit—all it takes is a moment’s listen to recognize that.

DJ Kyle Mabson and DJ Professor Cantaloupe (Mitch’s KXLU alter-ego) were essential to the evening’s success, as were the Pehr people, who are always so supportive. Andy Ben’s veg soup (a tasty squash puree with just the right amount of kick) greatly enhanced the event. It was a cold night and the warm treat definitely took the edge off! There were some great outfits this night…. I wish I had captured more of them in photos. But I purposefully held back on the pics. The evening was so mystical, dark, and special that the camera’s flash seemed like a violation. YOU REALLY HAD TO BE THERE…

…And this Monday we are doing it again, but bigger and stranger. DON’T MISS IT!!!

FAR-OUT SOUNDS: ESOTERIC MUSIC MASTER MITCHELL BROWN CURATES BACK-TO-BACK MONDAYS! HEADLINERS INCLUDE CARLA BOZULICH & NELS CLINE, FOOT VILLAGE, & HEALTH!!!

carnagemondaysfeb.jpg
My good friend Mitchell Brown is curating the next two Sean Carnage Monday Nights at Pehrspace, and I’m bouncing off the fucking walls in anticipation of the musical treats he is bringing us!

A little background on how I know Mitch: he was one of the first people I met in Los Angeles in 2002, through our mutual friend Don Bolles. Mitch—as “Professor Cantaloupe”—hosts the brilliant free-form audio program “Glossolalia” 10-11pm every Wednesday night on KXLU 88.9 FM. As I had been deeply involved in radio in Cleveland (as program director and programmer for five years on WRUW 91.1 FM), Mitch’s mastery of the form and his in-depth knowledge of electronic, noise, and just-plain-weird-musics was immediately impressive.

And Mitch was a real sweetheart to me, too—newbie that I was. It turns out that the above mentioned styles of music are only the tip of the iceberg as far as Mitch’s interests are concerned. The man is also an aficionado of Krautrock, soul/funk, children’s records, spoken word, novelty records, psychotronic outsider shit, indie music, metal, hardcore… you name it. This guy is interested in everything and he really knows his shit.

Shortly after I arrived in L.A., Mitch started hosting informal, mind-blowingly diverse salon-style concerts at his apartment—with everyone sharing veg entrees, ganja, and pillows on the floor. It reminded me of tales I had heard about the Ann Arbor modern music scene of the early sixties—an era that remains one of my #1 inspirations. I was in heaven! Everyone I met there was so down-to-earth, too—just like Mitch.

Mitch has been a big supporter of my Monday Nights, even though he works full-time as an educator of special needs kids during the week. He plays music with them, gives them confidence to express themselves, even features them on various bills he has booked at places like the Smell.

Additionally, Mitch is a musician, and he runs the excellent and uncategorizable record label, Melon Expander. Whew—busy guy, eh!?

So, nearly three years into our Monday Night adventure it was waaay past due to give Mitchell his own nights to experiment with. I know you will be as impressed as I am with what he’s done to turn us all on to the best, out-of-the-mainstream new sounds. “So many different micro-communities in L.A. hold their own secret seeds,” Mitch says. “So we cross-pollinate and sprout cerebral loveliness!”

Don’t miss these amazing events!!!
