THIS MONDAY: ST. PATRICK’S DAY AT PEHRSPACE!!! PLUS: NEW PHOTOS OF THE AMAZEMENTS, NASA SPACE UNIVERSE, SUBVACUUM OF NOTHING & TWIN CRYSTALS!

252.jpg
Did you know that “Carnage” is an Irish name? Well it is!

So come celebrate St. Paddy’s Day in style with a bunch of truly Gaellic (gay-lick?) folks at Pehrspace this Monday. Who knows? Maybe some leprechauns will bring us green beer!

The music will certainly be incredible… or should I say AMAZE-ING. That’s because it’s week three of The Amazements’ super-spectacular four-week curation of Sean Carnage Monday Nights.

THIS COULD BE THE BEST INSTALLMENT YET!!!

Each week, the Amaze-men play a new set of their ever-evolving music. Last Monday, they debuted a TON of fresh material and it was fucking ripping!! Yeah, I am sometimes prone to hyperbole but THEY ARE THE REAL FUCKING DEAL! Elon, Liam and Brendan have really crafted something novel with just bass, drums and guitar. The Amazements’ music is undeniably contemporary yet is rooted in the proudly contrarian musical tradition of our great city Los Angeles. Witness their full-on attack and you will hear shreds of X, the Germs, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band (circa MIRROR MAN), the Minutemen and… Eazy-E (!?) fly past your ears. Yes, these young guys have simultaneously absorbed 40+ years of musical history AND reconfigured it to the needs of the modern music lover. No retro here—the Amazements seethe with the spirit of NOW.

The Amazements have also chosen fantastic bands to play with. Last week, NASA Space Universe was absurdly great… and messy. In fact, I was still cleaning up their rock explosion today. Ha! Subvacuum of Nothing drove to Pehr all the way from Texas to blast their two-piece ultra-tech metallic hardcore. I loved it! Vancouver, BC’s Twin Crystals were a bit of a surprise. They sounded kinda no-wave on Myspace, but live they were way more naturalistic and musically rich than than their mp3s suggested. Twin Crystals grooved along impressively, with startling detours at all the right times. I hope both these touring bands come back. With half the local musical underground at SXSW, there were quite a few folks who I know would have been super-impressed had they been there. There’s always next time, right?

Kyle Mabson is the man. He played his jams, he did sound, he looked for “that one girl” and musical equipment online… I couldn’t do these shows without Kyle. Or the Pehr folks. Or our intelligent and down-to-earth audience. Thanks x1 million for your support!!

So don’t miss the show this week… There will be lots of surprises, and where the else else would you want to kick out the jams on St. Patrick’s Day?

THE BEST FUCKING MUSIC IN LOS ANGELES: NEW PHOTOS OF THE AMAZEMENTS’ FIRST PEHR EXTRAVAGANZA WITH SOLAR WIMP, SICHSHIFTER, KNIGHT RIDER & NAOMI!!!

49.jpg
I admit it—I kinda limped into Monday this past week. But, through the healing powers of GLORIOUS NEW MUSIC, I stand before you today A NEW MAN!!!

Yes, I have been reborn through the baptism of feedback and the rhythmic holiness of some particularly great bands: Sichshifter (Kyle Mabson & Dalton from Robin Williams On Fire), Solar Wimp (includes Rune, formerly of Monday Night champs Warm Climate), Naomi (40 BANDS! alumnus and superstar from San Diego), Knight Rider (also Monday Nights champions—now back after a short hiatus), and of course THE AMAZEMENTS, curators of the first four weeks of March.

We also had a special guest performance from Monday Nighters Brooke and Devra, but I’ll describe that more below. It was our first trans-continental performance—really cool!

This show was an epiphany. L.A. undergound musicians are clearly moving forward in all genres—at once! All the players are crackling with energy and inspiration—I really think we are in a new golden age of music here, and if you haven’t experienced it, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?

Sichshifter was created by Kyle and Dalton on the day of the show. This should be a full-time band—their triumphant drums ‘n synth heavy metal could be the soundtrack to my brain. Knight Rider returned after singer Mike was out of town for awhile. Fuck—I am glad these guys are back. I can’t think of anyone other group around that so deftly combines electronic/industrial/rock/noise/total aggressive weirdness into such potent and groundbreaking music. Gnarly. Naomi has honed her self-created electronic ballads to a laser-sharp—and highly danceable—edge. Solar Wimp… Wow. This band had moments of full-on Dazzling Killmen-esque transcendence, with wicked guitar, unrelenting bass and the craziest, tightest drummer I’ve heard in years—the guy was a rager on the kit. Not every song reached such heights, but, hey, even their lesser songs were merely…. incredible? You can’t ask for much better than that, and they are a new band, too.

The Amazements hit a transcendent peak, too, with tons of highly impressive new songs that sent my brain reeling. This is my favorite rock band in Los Angeles! I really hesitate to compare their music to anyone else’s, but… well, here’s just a grab bag of super awesome musical connections that The Amazedudes create in my mind when I am rocking to their three-piece insanity: the swampy chaos of Mt. Shasta, absolutely mind-blowingly high-pitched guitar mayhem a la prime Captain Beefheart, and the far-out post-grunge deconstructionism of early (circa-”Long Hair in Three Stages”) U.S. Maple. I dunno if those references mean anything to anyone in 2008, but, goddamn, those are three of my favorite bands of all time, so The Amazements are in pretty mothefucking awesome company there!!

The Amazements host the next three Mondays at Pehrspace so do come and check them out and tell me what YOU think, will you?

This past Monday we also had a special performance from You Are Not My Mother—a “supergroup” of Monday regulars Brooke and Devra. Devra’s in Chicago so she phoned it in—literally! With little more than a cellphone, a microphone, feedback, chanting and dancing, these two women wove an impressive spell. Kudos!

This week: Night Wounds has cancelled their appearance, as their tour is not happening. So watch for an update on the show from me before Friday.

I just had to post these photos today because I was so excited by the music The Amazements spearheaded!!!

I am really proud of the line-up for this coming Monday, as NASA Space Universe is another local underground band that speaks to my soul—their CD was my favorite of 2007. Subvacuum of Nothing promises to be truly crushing, with their technical almost Ruins-like two-piece attack, and Twin Crystals is three women who raise hell with their gruesome synthesizer-driven no wave rock ‘n roll.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS AWESOME SHOW!!!

TONITE: THE AMAZEMENTS KICK OFF THEIR NEW MARCH CONCERT CURATION! PLUS: THE RETURN OF SEAN’S CUSTOM WRISTBANDS!! AND NEW PHOTOS, TOO: CRISTOPHER CICHOCKI VIDEO SET, NONDOR NEVAI & BEN WOLCOTT, HALLOWEEN SWIM TEAM, RUMSPRINGA, WILLIAM BURGESS, RALE, & WARM CLIMATE… WOW!!!

Cristopher Cichocki put together a fucking amazing and groundbreaking new DVD of spastic, fractured “noise” videos which he previewed last Monday AND an incredible bill of performers that literally blew the place out. I mean, this show was always gonna be the coolest ever but who would have expected the hugest Pehr crowd in recent memory!? This show was nuts, and I admit, I went a little nuts, too! Yowza…

So let’s continue the insanity this week, shall we? I couldn’t be more proud of The Amazements and the bills they put together for the first 4/5ths of March. This band really speaks to me musically—these guys harken back to the ancient days of rock ‘n roll’s birth, yet they are also brusquely avant-garde in a way that no one prior to the 21st century could have anticipated. And they actually *play* music—like, listen to each other and react to what’s happening with their instruments. I mean, I am not hung up on that anymore (music can be totally impenetrable and yet still valid and involving on other levels), but it’s nice to hear three dudes going at it full force with some serious panache. The Amazements are the real deal! Check the March shows if you like new rock carnage!!!
