PHOTO CARNAGE: NEW PICS FROM THIS PAST MONDAY WITH THE MONOLATORS, BATTLEHOOCH, AND RIGHT HAND BAND!!!

Eeeek! I have no camera. My Sony crapped out (after 20,000 photos taken in 18 months… not joking here… guess it was time for it to go…) and then the unit I was borrowing had to be returned, soooo… I guess I am going to buying a new camera this weekend, eh?

Anyhow, the situation sucks because I just hosted the most amazing show this past Monday with the Monolators, Battlehooch (from S.F.) and Right Hand Band and I want to show you all the insanity that went down.

IF YOU HAVE PHOTOS OR GOOD-QUALITY VIDEOS FROM THIS PAST MONDAY SEND ME AN EMAIL: SEAN@SEANCARNAGE.COM

All three bands were amazing, and I was knocked out by what a great crowd they drew… incredible.

Anyhow, Right Hand Band was a three-piece this time with two acoustic guitars and hand percussion. I have always wanted to be a percussionist but, despite my efforts, will never be ‘cuz I can’t seem to master that hand/foot/rightside/leftside fourway coordination split. Yeah, whatever, but the percussion dude from RHB was making me seriously jealous by playing different beats with both hands and also on each foot (he had drum sticks taped to his boots!) and singing all the while. Why can’t I be that cool?

I realized that Battlehooch is pretty remarkable—not just for their music which is a rad, fucking dizzying mash-up of ’70s prog and punk and noise weirdness—but also because they have the identical line-up as classic Roxy Music with a guitarist, a drummer, an oboe player, a bassist, a singer (who sometimes plays keyboards) and an Eno… I mean, tape and synthesizer dude. Coincidence or….!? Nah, probably not. This band really fucking rips and could they be any nicer? My vote for most congenial band dudes of 2008 so far.

The Monolators’ singer had a birthday… and a 102° fever. That sucks. Astoundingly, the dude kept playing and singing for nearly a half hour before the band called it quits. This band is THE BEST!!! They play kind of straight ahead rock songs—the kind that make me yawn when other bands play them. But the Monolators have this secret special ingredient (they listen to each other, for one…. they also are completely fearlessly rocking at all times when they are onstage) that turns ordinary material into the stuff of legend. I definitely definitely wanna have them back again. One weird thing they did that was highly amusing: after a song they would swap out an instrument and replace it with a bass guitar. By the last song they were all playing basses!!! WOAAHHHHHHH!!!! HUGE BASS DRONE!!! Sorta like My Bloody Valentine with the treble turned off. I LOVE IT!!!

NEW SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT & NEW PHOTOS, TOO: I.E., E & E, 60 WATT KID, & SNACKS!!!

364.jpg
LET THERE BE CARNAGE… Last Monday’s show totally rocked! This was, like, the perfect concert. All the bands were amazing—I.E., E & E, 60 Watt Kid, and Snacks from Baltimore—and the crowd was WOW! Such a great crowd of friends!!!

Snacks got things started with their two man synth & drums attack. Many times, the modular synth sounded like a saxophone or even an entire horn section. The percussion was completely abstract and wild… and PEOPLE FUCKING LOVED IT! I think Kyle was jealous because the audience was loving Snacks’ jazz so much. Check out Snacks on Myspace if you can because these two are pretty cool!

60 Watt Kid… I don’t even know what to say anymore. He’s taken me to the highest heights and the most soul-rending lows—often in the same performance. This night, backed up by a selection of incredible musicians, was no different. At one moment, I was floating thru space, digging on the sights and sounds. The next moment, I just wanted my mommy. 60 Watt Kid can really tug at the heart strings. Anyhow, a bravura performance. Why isn’t this guy internationally famous and influential!? Please remember your Monday night friends if this happens, okay, Kid?

E & E are Margot from I.E.’s backup dancers Erik and Elijah (a real life couple). They are brilliant dancers, and some of the nicest, most happening guys you could ever hope to meet. So I knew this would be good. But I didn’t expect E & E to be A REAL BAND! I mean, I expected dancing, or crowd-baiting performance art, or… shit, I dunno. Instead, we got amazing songs, real instruments, great singing, dancing (yes), and even an all-star chorus of Inland Empire musicians. E & E is proof-positive that the L.A. scene is the BEST and is so very highly inspired, ‘cuz even groups that you expect to be maybe gimmicky one-offs are well thought out and fucking BRILLIANT. I want more E & E!!!

Margot’s I.E. is among the funnest and most musical one-person electronic “bands” I have ever witnessed. Most solo performers who use pre-recorded tracks try to play a bunch of instruments simultaneously to show you how “real” they are, despite the recordings being pumped through the PA. They might sing live, but otherwise they are totally boring. Dan Deacon’s an exception to this. So’s Margot. Margot isn’t trying to prove anything—except that with a bunch of glowsticks and some killer songs, you can have a wild party! I.E. was so great I drank a bunch of booze and spent the rest of the night bumping into walls and being an ass. LET THERE BE CARNAGE!

Big BIG thanks to all the performers, who were wonderful, and to Pehrspace, and KYLE, who is a true friend. Ugh. Two weeks until Richmond leaves. I know this will be a good break for us, but I am falling apart.
