3RD ANNIVERSARY SHOW THIS WEEK WITH ALL-STAR LINE-UP! PLUS, NEW PIX: KILLSONIC MARCHING GANG, SKYLINE ELECTRIC, VOODOO ORGANIST, EVERYBODY, & MUCH MUCH MORE!!

276.jpg
WOW—this past Monday was CRAZY CRAZY BUSY and SUPER-PACKED! I was fretting because Health/Mabson/Foot Village/etc. were jamming at the Smell on the same night, and their show was a sell-out, too.

But goddamn, we also had a sell-out crowd—Pehr was so packed I could not shut the doors at two different points. That’s a lot of people!

This past Monday was a great night for L.A. music :)

Killsonic Marching Gang was on and off the billl so many times I can’t count. But they did, in fact, show up and TOTALLY ROCK everyone in attendance. Many people told me afterwards that this was “the BEST Monday show” they had ever seen. Well, having an 18-piece psychotronic marching band in the place the size of a two bedroom apartment is bound to be thrilling; fortunately, KMG’s music also stood up aesthetically. They recalled a SoCal version of Motherhead Bug or early Cop Shoot Cop being molested by John Philip Sousa. Very, very exciting indeed!

Everybody are pro musicians who aren’t afraid to get dirty and sweat a little. Their three piece, synth-heavy line-up was totally back-to-Zeuhl, i.e. they had a Magma-ish flair that was as alien as it was beguiling. The drummer totally smoked, too. This guys was unstoppable. Just mind-blowing.

Skyline Electric also blew some brains out—in a good way. The ensemble features former Devo drummer Alan Myers plus (on this occasion) our old friend and Il Corral cohort Adam Reese on bass, in addition to what seemed like every other cutting-edge improviser in the city. Some free jazz is just too spacious and precious to be interesting to me. Skyline Electric avoids that trap by just going for it at every moment. This was wild, cacophonous, and soulful stuff. Cheers to you, guys.

The show kicked off in grand style with my friend and musical idol Scott Wexton, aka the Voodoo Organist. He and his drummer blew through some semi-trad organ combo stuff with a Satanic flair and mischevious musical spirit that got everyone clapping, dancing and at least two-six packs closer to serious wastedness. Ahhh… that’s good music!

The night would have been nothing at all without our DJs: Nanny Cantaloupe (who booked the bands and spun the jams) and HM Selecta (who played some incredible records… where does he find them?). Hats off to these two musical mensches.

This week is the 3 year anniversary of Monday shows. I’m really proud that this crazy idea—regularly scheduled, all-ages, D.I.Y. renegade cutting-edge music parties—executed by me—a pre-Alzheimers homosexual wastoid music fanatic from the polluted shores of Lake Eerie—could be so loved by YOU—big city folk with sophisticated tastes and zillions of party options. But somehow, it has all worked out… and it keeps working. Brilliantly, if I quite immodestly say so.

Thank you.

I hope you will join us at Pehrspace.

TONITE: SEAN CARNAGE KEEPS IT REAL!!!

Health/Foot Village/Kyle Mabson are playing at the Smell tonite. I am very sad that this could not be my show, especially since it is happening on a Monday. But Health didn’t book it—it was in the realm of the booking agents, and I don’t work with booking agents. The saddest part is that I won’t get to hear all the great music that I’m sure will be played by this talented bunch tonite, nor will I get to hang with many of my friends.

But honestly, this has happened to me before. Reference: almost the entire decade of the ’90s. Back then, Nirvana caused the majors to go on an 8+ year indie buying spree and my most beloved bands were suddenly playing nothing less than 400 seat auditoriums! That had mixed results in the end, but when you are in a band, moving up is unquestionably thrilling. And proper. Plus, Health will be DJing at my Pehrspace show *next* Monday, so don’t miss them. They are L.A.’s pride and joy.

When you are on the side of the underdog like I am (i.e., giving shows to small bands and new performers), you must get used to the fact that great musicians move up and out… they cannot play capacity 49 places like Pehr forever.

So good luck to my friends tonight. I will be at Pehrspace, doing my regular thing: hosting extraordinary new music!

I am so proud of tonite’s line-up, and any chance I get to collaborate with marvelous Mitchell Brown and KXLU is a true blessing. We will be dancing. Will you join us?

MIND-BLOWING, CUTTING-EDGE DANCE PARTY THIS MONDAY! PLUS, NEW PIX: ZECHS MARQUISE, NECKHOLD, WHITMAN, STELLALUNA, & DESTROY TOKYO!!!

235.jpg
I got a lot of praise for this past Monday’s show—perhaps because it was a throw back to the early early days of Sean Carnage Mondays, with equal time for rock, folk, and noise… all on the same bill. I mean, I always always try to mix it up, but this past Monday was particularly diverse. And, from what I felt and what you all told me, it hung together—beautifully!!!

Neckhold from Australia was ear-splitting, ennervating noise made by two skateboarding punks from down under. Hell, they even used their skateboards to make sounds—never seen or heard that before. Awesome! Whitman turned in one of his best sets of drunken gothik folk transcendance, which ended with a can of “Joose” taped to his shirt. Ragin’. Stellaluna aka Fran from Phoenix is so very talented—she can sing!—and her set was not the “mood kill” she predicted it would be. Quite the opposite: everyone gathered around and pressed in tight to hear her sing her brilliant songs (and a great cover, too). Destroy Tokyo are calling themselves “Religious Girls” now. I have always liked them (I like post-Krautrock noisy pop), but, after being on tour for nearly a month, they have tightened up so much that other people finally seem to be catching on, too. I guess this is one of those bands that needed to sharpen their attack to get people to pay attention. Well, folks are listening now! Religious Girls’ mechanik trancey synth and drum reveries reached almost to the Health level of excellence. Finally, Zechs Marquise—who were lovely guys—tied up all the loose ends with a set of trippy guitar jams that perfectly appealed to the Hawkwind fan in me. Bravo!

There was just one sad thing about this show: NO KYLE!!!! Waaah. Bring my Mabson back (Kyle returns to Pehr on August 4th).

CARNAGE IN THE NEWS

HOW EXCITING—L.A. CITYBEAT WRITES ABOUT SEAN CARNAGE MONDAY NIGHTS IN THE NEW ISSUE ON STREETS NOW:

Buy My Panties: The riotous Monday nights staged by Sean Carnage were a mainstay at the Il Corral during those few charmed months the quasi-underground venue deafened neighbors in fashionable Koreawood. The Corral kids have transferred ops out to the USC warehouse maze, renamed themselves Zero-Point, and throw their last event next Saturday night, unlikely victims of a noise ban. Meanwhile, skronk impresario Carnage soldiers on at Pehrspace, a onetime office-block secreted in the back of a tiny strip-mall in the downtown side of Echo Park, where I discovered him Monday last. Two bands hadn’t shown – something Carnage avowed hadn’t happened in at least “a zillion years” – but none of the 30-odd hipsters clumped outside seemed to mind, and any incipient frustrations could be taken out on Zaq Landsberg’s hypertrophied piñata. “You whack it and it craps one piece of candy at a time,” Sean marveled, as Portland’s Here Comes a Big Black Cloud!! loaded and plugged in. Dense sheets of advanced art-noize ensued, out of which swaggered a series of familiar ole blooz riffs just like Jeff Beck used to emit. The room heaved and roiled in the time-hallowed way, as some sweet one in a knit minidress began a frug right out of The T.A.M.I. Show, and anon came a cover of Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love?” This traditionalist vibe appeared to briefly unhinge one of the lovably dorky guitarists, who gestured to the merch table and spieled, “We got CDs, tapes, panties! They could be yours!”
