NEW SHOW & NEW PHOTOS: GUNS ‘N BROSES, I.E., ADVENTURE, FUTURE ISLANDS, SEX-S, THE BEST BAND EVER, & MORE!!!

54.jpg
Someday I am going to write a book about the amazingly weird and aggro music performances I have witnessed, and there will most likely be a chapter in my book dedicated to Guns ‘N Broses!

Duck and cover when they jam—their “music” turns whatever audience is assembled into cavemen in about 2 seconds flat! Sorta like Guns ‘N Roses fans when they are informed that Axl will not be performing because there were the wrong color Skittles in his trailer.

Anyhow, Guns ‘N Broses is totally balls-out free-jazz cacophony with Guns ‘N Roses and Metallica backing tracks as the only organizing element. They really are something to see and hear. They whipped out those huge foam bats and soon everyone was smashing and trashing each other relentlessly. G’NB walk that fine line between genius and horrible-ness—sorta like that whole nightmarish ‘88-’92 time period flashing-back “Jacob’s Ladder”-style. And for bringing scariness back to music, I commend them.

I.E. is Margot and I tried to take photos but I was dancing too much! :) Anyhow, Margot actually sang a bit of Miley Cyrus—tying her performance in with the lovely poster she made. I really think that Margot is gonna be a SoCal legend if she isn’t already. All her songs are hilarious and also a bit sad… I guess that’s how growing up in the Inland Empire will affect you. I.E. is the best!!!

Adventure is Ben from Baltimore. He is in the new SPIN Magazine, which is pretty remarkable. He jams out amazing instrumental techno that is really accomplished and highly danceable. Woo! Good times…

Future Islands had me thinking “Wow—this is a band with musicality and nuance and a great singer and they could hold their own with any great band from any time period. There’s no qualifying Future Islands’ greatness.” And so here I am, twelve hours later and I see no reason to modify my initial impression. FI were amazing.

Sex-S is yet another shockingly great musical project from Sam (and Will K. and others). Download his CD from Myspace ‘cuz these are gonna be your back-to-school jams, I guarantee.

The Best Band Ever… did you miss them? YOU MISSED THE BEST BAND EVER!??!?!? OMG, you should be ashamed!

Thank you to everyone who came out. Arrgh. It was another evening where I wanted to hang with nearly everyone who showed up one-on-one style… So many friends. I hope you had a great time. We gotta get together outside of Pehr sometime soon, ‘cuz when it gets hectic I am sad that I don’t have time to talk to everyone. In the meantime, though, thanks for your support. I appreciate it so much, and the bands and performers certainly do, too. We are making history… A retarded, mutated history, but history nonetheless.

DON’T MISS THIS WEEK’S SHOW!!!

NEW SHOW & NEW PHOTOS: A THIRST FOR BLOOD ROCKIN IN MY DICK, ALEXIS GIDEON, CARCRASHLANDER, & KID INFINITY!!!

27.jpg
This was a rad, rad show at the end of a long and wild holiday weekend. I think everyone was pretty much like me—totally pooped—but we all drew together for one last hurrah… and it was a marvelous night.

Kid Infinity is an up-and-coming MC and DJ combo (with Erik Anaya on lights—rad!), and Ryan (the MC) has some great songs and pretty stylin’ delivery. I already booked them again for October 27th, so get your dancing shoes ready!

Carcrashlander probably would be the kind of band you would more likely encounter in a bar. They are from Portland, are a bit older, play like pros, and they rip out some loud cryin’-in-your-brew kinda songs. But what sets them apart is the amazing range of emotions they conjure up with their songs—and their tendency toward jarring dissonance. I was very very impressed by these guys. They took a style that’s kinda more mainstream, and injected it with a ton of originality. Kudos!

Alexis Gideon played guitar with Carcrashlander and, geez, why is this guy not the #1 guitar player in America!? He fucking rocks!!

Alexis was up again after that with his new “video opera”—a twenty minute story that he animated and then sings and plays live. Wow! Sooo incredible on every front. Alexis did a Monday Night residency last year when he lived in L.A., so it was great to see/hear him again. He is a superb individual, and he should be really proud of his newest creation. The audience was spellbound.

Last up was the new noise supergroup A Thirst for Blood Rockin in My Dick featuring Kyle Mabson and Cole from Cock in Black, Doug from Birth!, and Narin from Narin. This was the rambunctious, punishing, take-no-prisoners “bro noise” that has been so lacking lately on the scene (since the demise of Deep Jew, etc.). These four screamed and yelled and punched and kicked and shoved and rolled on the floor, totally annoying everyone (in a great way). Yeah… ATFBRIMD=awesome.

This Monday, we are gonna get really freaky. So bring your lover, take off your clothes, and shake your nappy dreadlocks to the powerful NOISE…

DAN DEACON, KYLE MABSON, & MONOTONIX AT F YEAH FEST… WOO-HOO!!!

91.jpg
This was a great night full of friends and awesome music at the site of the first porno I ever worked on (Kill Girl Kill). Hangar 1018, located on Santa Fe in East L.A., is all spiffed up now—it’s not an illegal rave dump anymore. Instead, Mik and Kyle and Anna and I arrived to find corporate sponsorship, bathrooms (!), and a pretty nice stage area.

Kyle immediately set up, though they were kind enough to delay the show to allow me and Mik to go run an errand for Dan (he had forgotten his green skull, so we retrieved it). When we got back, Kyle slammed into action, basically ruining all these great songs that the kids in attendance must have cherished. What an asshole, right? Not quite—the audience thought this was hilarious.

If you hadn’t figured it out before now: Kyle Mabson has boff dixx on the pulse of young America.

Or something like that.

Friend Chau arrived with his new lover Ronald, who was a lovely man—international, with just the right amount of gay. I introduced them both to Mik, who I adore. This was a really amazing and important occasion for me because I am trying to bust out of this compartmentalized/hetero-centric/Catholic rat trap my brain has been in my whole life. I am really inspired by my co-worker A.J. who makes all his lovers and former lovers his friends and also makes them be friends with each other! It may sound simple, but it is pretty radical.

So, introducing Chau and Mik and having them not only get along, but seeing them have fun together—and also meeting Ronald, Chau’s dude—was sooooo rad. I felt like a very sophisticated 21st Century faggot and, yeah, that’s exactly where I wanna be.

After this revelation, it was back inside the Hangar for Dan Deacon! Dan’s from Baltimore, of course, but he’s been pretty much “adopted” by the L.A. kids at this point. Dan works the crowd with such ease—and they respond!—it’s a joy to behold. Check out the photos—this was the best time.

Monotonix from Tel Aviv are one of the only rock bands Mabson likes to watch in a live setting, so you know they must be great. They are like Blue Cheer + Guru Guru + High Rise… Incredible early-70s-ish hippy rock with guitar solos and showmanship. So so great!! They are such hairy men, too… God bless you, Monotonix, you are beautiful.

LET THE FREAK FLAG FLY!!!!!!

Dan Deacon stayed at our place and ate fried chicken at my dining room table. He’s a sweetie. Kyle and Anna went to Vermont House, but you’ll have to ask him about that.

Don’t miss the big show this week:
