PETERS POOLYBOYS’ “SINGLES ISSUE” RELEASE PARTY AT SHOWCAVE WITH I.E. & MI AMI!!!

04.jpg
Another night, another amazing time!!! This event at the very comfortable and wonderful Echo Park gallery Showcave (a Pehrspace neighbor) was to celebrate the release of Peter Moran’s new Peter’s Poolboys “Singles Issue” featuring yours truly (plus Kyle, and nearly every other L.A. friend… I guess we are all single as of this summer). Of course, Peter was being a bit over-ambitious and did not get the magazine finished. No matter, even his stop-gap version of the issue was impressive.

So was the show: Margot and Erik delivered an absolutely scorching set of I.E. favorites. I am old friends with 2/3rds of Mi Ami… Damn, I have known Daniel and Jacob for nearly a decade, but haven’t seen them since 2003 or something. I was ever so blown away by their new music (with Damon on drums… he had jammed with the Boredoms the night before… he’s rad). Despite the fact that Daniel demolished his guitar on the second song, Mi Ami chugged away with furious abandon. Don’t miss them at Pehrspace this Monday—this is amazing music you cannot live without!!!

Accompanying me this night was Mik, and it was lovely to spend the evening with him.

We jetted out early, and I am sorry I missed the final performer Nite Jewel who played a Juno-60 keyboard, and sounded great.

This was one of the best nights, but after two other great evenings on the town, it was time for some rest :)

88 BOADRUM AT THE LA BREA TAR PITS!!!!

241.jpg
Visually and audiophonically, this Friday evening gathering was the most impressive concert of the year: The Boredoms’ Yamatsuka Eye & Yoshimi P-We (& whoever those new cats are) leading 88 drummers in an 88 minute musical tour de force at 8:08pm on 8/8/08 at the La Brea Tar Pits… FUCK YEAH!!!

The Boredoms have been a fave of mine since I bought “Soul Discharge” on LP from Andrew Klimek at the second Sonic Disturbance Fest at the Cleveland Public Theater back in 1991. The album cover was super-freaky… and, damn, the music changed my life (seriously)!

Later, in 1992 the Boredoms stayed at my place on Mayfield Rd. for a coupla weeks. They were stranded in America… I took them to the Salvation Army and Angie’s Soul Food Kitchen, and they jammed at the Euclid Tavern on one of those classic Monday Nights with the Pain Teens (whose singer Bliss Blood ripped out a rendition of “You Only Live Twice” wich still gives me goosebumps when I reminisce), Brutal Truth, etc.—that was the funnest ever (and it took my mind off my pending ditching of college… or maybe encouraged it?). During that time I learned Eye was making all his money as a “black” model in Japan (he apparently would get sprayed with dark pigment, and rake in thousands of bucks in ad campaigns targeting the African-American worshipping Japanese youth market) and that there were no guinea pigs in Japan (Yoshimi was astounded by my guinea pig).

Flash forward many many years, and Eye has gone spiritual (and altered his name), and Yoshimi has a Flaming Lips album named after her, and they execute massive events like this one, with an all-star cast of underground icons like:

I was in musical heaven!!! So weird… so great!!!!!!

Anyhow, Kyle bailed on this event at last minute (it was not for him… he detests “drum circle B.S.” and has a 2 minute attention span), so I hooked up with friend Chau, who has become one of my most inspiring new buddies… After the event, we checked out Chris Burden’s new LACMA installation of classic Hollywood lamp posts, plus we chatted with Will K and Liam Amazedude and Sam “Jamaica Man,” who told us about his very exciting upcoming Monday Night CD release (w/ me & Kyle at Pehr) on September 8th… don’t miss that.

After all the mind-blowing underground music from the Boredoms and friends, Chau took me to a mainstream WeHO gay bar which was totally hilarious and fun. We played a rather cruel pick-up game (as per Chau’s instruction) with the guys in attendance… But Chau got his come-uppance as a very out-of-shape and scary old man stalked him no matter where he went inside the club. Ha! Then we crashed… drunk, and aesthetically overloaded. Whew—whatta night! One of the best.

Enjoy the pics!!!!

BRADFORD NORDEEN’S “FEVER PITCH” BOOK RELEASE AT PERES PROJECT!!!

910.jpg
Okay—this was a fun event: Bradford Nordeen’s release party for his new book “Fever Pitch” about gay/pop culture icons at Peres Project gallery in Chinatown. There was entertainment, a reading by Brad, tons of Sangria, hot and weird gay dudes (and ladies), and a chance to buy the book for $12.

The first performer, Ayana, was just fabulous. She sang some Diana Ross songs, and was clad in a brand new sequined Catherine Malandrino dress (apparently, Ms. Ayana is employed at the soon-to-open Malandrino flagship store… you may remember Ms. Malandrino from her appearance on PROJECT RUNWAY… she is a tres chic French designer with a very sexy accent).

Bradford was also amazing—he read an essay about buying the Posh & Becks issue of W Magazine… Richmond had that issue, so I laughed pretty hard ‘cuz that hit pretty close to home. I dunno… it’s a gay thing.

Anyhow, the second lovely lady who performed was just that… and not much else. Performers shouldn’t attempt singing if they aren’t prepared to 100% go for it! Eck. To be fair, her reading of Brad’s Kylie Minogue timeline set to a Kylie Minogue song was respectable enough.

The crowd was pretty awesome—I spotted Rudy Bleu, new friend Dennis, old pal Tai from Scoops gelato shop, hung with new friend Mik (who works in my building on Wilshire, and whom I met not thru my usual Internet slutting around, but by, ya know, actually walking up and introducing myself… radical), talked to Mr. Nordeen, met some cool new queers I had never seen around L.A. before, and chugged large quantities of sangria. Woo! Wasted! Afterwards, I ate some great Chinese food with Mik and returned home, still buzzed and happy to step out of the rock/noise world for a night, and back into an art-faggy universe that I haven’t been in contact much since I went to Case Western Reserve and was an artists’ assistant in the early 1990s.

I was really impressed by the gallery. Peres Project reps my fave artist-of-the-moment, Terence Koh, and advertises in Butt Magazine, etc. (Javer Peres is cool, dontcha know).

There’s another great Peres Project opening coming up, and I will be there (hint: so should you…. let’s party!): Artist Dean Sameshima’s “Numbers II (Ode to Johnny Rio),” Opening reception on Saturday, September 6th, 6-9pm. Check out Sameshima’s work… looks rad, eh?

More reminders about this as the time gets closer.

Enjoy the photos!
