My oh my oh my—Monday night was a fun little show… Captain Ahab and Bryan Lewis Saunders—who I hosted at the Smell a week previously at the beginning of their tour—were back in town and ON FIRE after a whirlwind trip across SoCal. Ahab played almost all new material from their upcoming album. And from the sound of things, this new LP is gonna be their best yet, with jams that are some of the highest-energy songs they have yet concocted. Wow! I was so impressed. Bryan Lewis Saunders, Kevin Shields and Cabinet of Natural Curiosities were pretty fucking mind-blowing, too, with their original takes on the well-loved genres of spoken word (with outre video accompaniment), noise and atmospheric folk, respectively. Cristopher Cichocki was a last minute addition to the show, and he set the tone for the night with his eye-popping new video… A vid that was bookended by a vignette starring none other than Captain Ahab’s Jim Merson, apparently shot many years ago when Cris and Jim were in high school. Fucking rad!!
Thank you to EVERYONE who came out—I was so proud of the audience of friends and music-lovers. It was a demanding show in the way that you had to stretch your brain to accept so many musical genres in one evening. But, of course, the Monday Nighters are used to this by now and rose to the occasion ably, giving each performer the warmest reception. Kudos to the awesome Monday Night audience!!!
Thanks also to Kyle Mabson, who bought me nuggets.
